Flame-on BBQ
Preparing a barbecue before making the food is a time consuming process that requires decent experience. During this design track we aimed to create a ‘quick set-up’ solution to enhance the user experience in both cooking and consuming the food.
The Flame-on barbecue can be used in two positions. The vertical position is to rapidly heat up the charcoals through the arising airflow. Once the charcoals are hot, the barbecue body can be rotated in the horizontal position to prepare the food.

User Journey
The Design2Gather Team kicked-off the project with an in-depth understanding of the customer and user journey, to find out what could be done to create an innovative design. Each step of the barbecue user flow was analyzed through the user journey. This made it clear that users struggled to heat up charcoals at the right temperature.
Research
Research tells us that one of the main issues when heating up a barbecue is a lack of oxygen when the user starts the fire. When the yellow flam is rising up, generally people start putting food on the grill. Unfortunately this results in a situation wherein the meat gets burnt instead of creating an enjoyable meal.
How can we design a barbecue that supports the process of heating up charcoals conveniently?
VisionDesign opportunity: Increasing the time people enjoy together, to enhance the barbecue experience.
The solution
The Flame-on barbecue is designed to use in a vertical position when people start barbecuing, to generate a chimney effect. The airflow will naturally arise when lighting up the charcoals. Once the charcoals are at the right temperature, the user can rotate the barbecue in horizontal position to start to prepare the meal.
Body that can rotate to generate airflow when heating up the charcoals
Foldable construction for easy transportation
Foldable legs
The foldable construction of the barbecue fits inside the body, to make the barbecue space-saving and convenient to transport.
Easy to use
The chimney effect supports users to heat-up the charcoals rapidly at the right temperature, which enhances the social aspect of barbecuing for everyone
Ergonomic design
Different heating zones
When the user rotates the barbecue in horizontal position, the charcoals will be gradually distributed. The area with more charcoals is for searing meat, whereas the area with less charcoals can be used for slow cooking.
